WHAT IS THERAPEUTIC RECREATION?
This is a common question I am frequently asked. Therapeutic recreation is a form of therapy that is based on an individuals area of interest which helps to enhance their quality of life. Therapeutic recreation is a way for an individual to “recreate” themselves. Therapeutic recreation is not only for people with a disability but is for everyone! Each and every one of us takes part in recreational activities. Areas of interest such as listening to music, dancing, singing, playing games and all activities that we do on our leisure time is a recreational activity. They are activities that we enjoy to do and help us to develop as a person and individual.
Art is a recreation and leisure activity that many individuals do to be adventurous and creative. Art allows a person to be in a relaxed state and can vary, from doing individual work, as a self-reflection or group work where individuals can interact with others. Art as a therapy allows people to experiment with different colors, materials and build a healthy way for self-expression.
WHY PURPLE ELEPHANTS TR?
The purple elephant is a creature near and dear to my heart that I have created myself. Although purple is my favorite color, it is also a recreational color. The color purple is symbolic for hope, relaxation, calmness and peace which are words someone would relate to when they are taking part in a recreational activity. Why elephants? Although elephants are my favorite animal, they are gentle giants and are known to be very creative, intelligent and they have great memories.
Art is a beautiful way for individuals to build self expression in a way that they did not think they could. Sometimes a picture can express more than words. Depending on the individual, art activities can vary. If a person does not have a lot of experience in art, they can start off on an easy medium such as a pencil drawing, marker, pen and ink or even painting are great ways to start. They are very forgiving mediums and can easily be fixed.

The medium used for this piece was Dot Paint markers. A student of mine made this and I was absolutely amazed because unintentionally he placed the colors in a certain way.
I STRONGLY encourage children to be exposed to art and be allowed to explore at an early age. Sometimes a child might not be able to express themselves and art can allow them the opportunity to have a voice.
I like how you used your two favorite things as your theme , for this website and your art has progressed very much, and keep up the good work .
